coutorture

I've been following the discussion on Lol's blog regarding Coutorture and discussed some of the technical concerns with my boyfriend, Assaf. He's an open source developer and develops both GPL and non-GPL code and he says there's clearly no violation of the GPL license.

"The GPL provisions specifically cover binary distributions, but don't require websites to do anything specific. That's how Google, Yahoo and MySpace can use open source, without having to mention it on their front page. I link to WordPress, but only because I think it can make a difference. We'll get more people to blog if they know about good blogging tools. It has nothing to do with licensing or credits."

Assaf also says dappr.com looks like it's built using Rails, guessing it's Phil's own code (as he's said before) since he's seen nothing like this on Rails before. There's one link to a blog, which is a WordPress blog, but also says (scroll to the bottom) "powered by WordPress". Coutorture looks very "Rails" not "Drupal".

I've spoken with Julie via email and I've agreed to be a Coutorture partner. If Coutorture's not for you, don't join. No problem. If you have questions, go ahead and ask them. Julie is great about answering questions, responding to constructive criticism and the like. Iris is a troll and while I hold a "do not feed the trolls" stance, I just wanted to throw in my two cents to squelch any accusations about legalities and licensing issues.
