i heart sewing

Posted in DE stuff by verbalcroquis on December 13, 2007

Yes, it’s still me, Zoë, writing this blog.  Yes, I used to hate sewing.  Let me tell you all the reasons for the change.

1.  The bulk of my past sewing has been at school on shared machines or at home on a small home Singer.  Sharing (old) machines is a nightmare when deadlines are compounded with students who jam machines and don’t fix them, leaving the mess for the next person to jump on the machine.  The small Singer was a gift from a friend, and I appreciate the gift (I won two different competitions with that thing!), but it’s slow, weak and crotchety compared to the industrials I’m used to.

2.  My brand new Juki is like driving a Maserati after testing out various used lemons over the years.  It’s absurdly sexy in a way few understand.

3.  I really like my chair.  It’s nothing special (it was $10 at Office Depot or something like that), but it doesn’t slide all over the floor, it’s the perfect height, it’s comfortable.

4.  It’s a great way to be productive when your brain can’t make any decisions anymore.  Sewing is so zen.  I can’t believe I just said that.

I’ve even been contemplating making some clothes for myself!  I mean serious consideration.  I have leftover yardage from every past project, especially that yummy gold charmeuse from my Gen Art dress.

Hey, that’s great! Sewing for yourself is the best – you know you’ll appreciate the end product!
