hi, i’m not dead

Posted in general by verbalcroquis on July 24, 2006

“Hi, I’m not dead,” is the standard greeting between my friends and I when we haven’t spoken in a while.  So, dear blogosphere, hi, I’m not dead.

I’ve had a rough few days. This industry, like I’ve said a million times, really does a number on you sometimes.  There’s so much going on it’s hard to breathe.

The Gen-Art dress.  Let’s just be frank.  It’s not as good as I hoped.  Not even close.  Yes, I’m a perfectionist.  Right now, it’s hard to tell if it’s really that bad (I’m trying so hard to look at it as objectively as possible), or my perfectionistic tendencies are casting a weird shade on things.

My first collection for this company I work for is at the tradeshows as we speak.  I so desperately want the collection to do well.  I’ve wrung my hands so much the past few days that I barely have any skin left on them.  In my fantasy, we sell like crazy.  In reality, I know leather isn’t a popular item during the spring shows, so I’m just hoping that we sell better than last year.  I don’t have the balls to call my sales guys and ask them how it’s going.

I still haven’t hired a new person yet and my tech leaves this Friday.  I can see myself working 3 jobs in the interim and let’s just say I’m not entirely excited about it.

But, as always, your VC is trying her damnedest to see the positive, stay focused, and just keep plowing ahead.  (And believe me, this disgusting heat wave is not helping matters.)  As previously posted, I’m taking August off to do nothing but my day job.  During that time, I hope to regain some of my old blog cred with some better posts about interesting topics other than my random updates.   Stay tuned, folks.

Oh, by the way, I’ll be in San Diego for Labor Day weekend.  My friend M and I will be flying down to visit a mutual friend of ours. I’m so excited!  He’s going to spoil us with home-cooking and motorcycle rides!  I know I have a couple of readers/fellow bloggers who live in San Diego.  Maybe a group coffee date?  I know it’s a ways off, but if you’re interested, leave me a comment or drop me an email at verbalcroquis at gmail dot com.

  1. i. cant. wait i cant wait i cant wait i cant wait i cant WAIT to see the gen art dress finished!

partially because I know I will think it is perfect in every way because, unlike you, i will not have spent a milliondybillion hours making it, and i will be unfamiliar with all the little bits that didnt go together quite like you’d hoped and I will not know about the part that isnt hanging right even though it looks like it is.

the best thing about that is that everybody else who will ever see it is in my boat, and not yours

    we’re gonna love it!

Exactly what she said! I can’t wait to see it!

Also, call your sales guy. Isn’t it better to just know than to chew your fingers to the bone wondering?

I’m glad you are saying that you will take August off. That means you will at least take some time to socialize and relax w/ the boy. You need it. You deserve it. Just don’t go back on it!

  3. Hi VC,

Hope you are still alive and your dress I am sure turned out fabulous! After just having watched the entire second season of Project Runway in two nights and reading about you killing yourself, I have to say, I am a bit scared of this industry!! But I think I’ve seen that passion is the driving force… do you sleep?

I recently had dinner here in NYC with Tricia of http://bitsandbobbins.com/ and am also amazed by her tornado of creativity. She is moving to SF in August, I hope you guys can meet. It would be an atomic explosion of apparel energy! I think her husband is a techie, like your BF, as well.

    all the best!

    Zoe,

Ok, first I’d like to say that I LOVE the dress. The first word that came to mind was “Sassy!” And of course, being the jewelry freak that I am, I especially like the way you accessorized the piece 😉

Please do email me about your trip to SD. Would love to meet with you over coffee…
